WOW! It’s really strange to think that it has been more than 2 years since we’ve hosted our good friend Steven. He lives a mere 2 hours away; we share very similar musical loves and friends, and we’re all “rather fanatical” Warrior supporters. Yet it was back on May Day of 2015 when Steven last appeared on the stage at Pono.
Steven had come to Santa Cruz, in part to celebrate the release of his latest CD, “Ho`omaopopo” (to understand), and what a great CD it is. It instantly transports the listener to Hawai’i with lush instrumentation, soaring falsetto vocals and a mix of old standards and modern originals which he co-wrote with friends Keola Donaghy and Puni Patrick. The project features guest artists Bryan Tolentino, Jeff Peterson, Casey Olsen, Matt Sproat, and cousin, Kumu Hula Kawika Alfiche.
I could include many accolades from various musicians and media personnel about Steven’s talents, but will limit it to just 2 comments from two of Hawai`i’s best known musicians upon learning of Steven’s winning “Hawai’i Music Awards New Artist of the Year 2006”: “Steven’s voice is 100% Hawaiian, with the pureness and honesty only few are blessed with”, Nathan Aweau. And “Steven is keeping the tradition and making music that flows from the heart and soul. He is part of the next generation of our legacy”, Cyril Pahinui.
It would be easy to go on and on about Steven and his talents, but better for you to come and experience him in person, and create your own review.
As always we invite and welcome ALL hula dancers to kick of your slippahs and join in when you know the song. And as you enter, please remember that tho we charge no cover, a $10 (or whatever amount is comfortable) donation to help him in his efforts toward recording his 3rd CD would be greatly appreciated.
