Kuleana

Pono Hawaiian Grill is thrilled to be able to present to you this “new collaboration” of “seasoned” expert musicians named “Kuleana”. Kuleana - vertical “Kuleana” is one’s personal sense of responsibility. “The person possessing Kuleana, believes in the strength of this value, and will be quick to say, “I accept my responsibilities, and I will be held accountable.” It is my guess that these three musicians believe themselves to be obligated to share the music and it’s spirit with everybody – that it is their responsibility to share their skills and understanding with others.

Oh, they know each other well and have played together at events many times, but playing regularly as a trio is something fairly new for them. We’ve been hosting David Kahiliaulani Kuhia Kaio on or near his Birthday (Feb. 2nd) since 2015 and are thrilled that he chooses to come to Santa Cruz and Pono for the Aloha Friday closest to the 2nd. each year.Keola and David Then last year he brought bassist Keola Grace who is also an amazing falsetto singer. David had referred to Keola as “the best falsetto singer on the Big Island”. I have to admit that I thought that such a claim might be an exaggeration when I first heard it. However when Keola started to sing I quickly became a convert. The addition of Sonny Lim was this year’s surprise, and it really got me excited. We are hoping that he will be able to bring his “frypan” steel guitar with him. The Lim Family, from Kohala, in the north of the Big Island, is another one of those older established Hawaiian families where they eat, breathe, and live music, and whose only form of entertainment back in the day was jamming with the relatives.

Having the opportunity to feature these three stars at Pono is an honor that we don’t take lightly, and we hope that you appreciate how special this really is. Like so many Hawaiian bands they are complimented by folks getting up and dancing to their music when they know the hula being played. And as you know, we don’t charge a cover at Pono, but we DO hope that you will consider the suggested $10 donation at the door as you enter. Airline prices only go UP – as do Santa Cruz Hotel prices. We hope that you can join us for this very special evening.
