Christy Leina’ala Lassiter is from Hilo, Hawai`i with Hawaiian ranching roots that come out of Kona, where her family has been running cattle for over 100 years. Her great grandparents ran one of the first hotels in Kona, “The Wall Hotel” famous for hosting the King and Queen of Siam, “back in the day”.

Growing up, Christy was an active horseback rider under the guidance of her mother Pudding Lassiter. Her grandmother, Pudding’s mother, was Kapua Wall Heuer, the first woman inducted into the Hawaii Paniolo (Cowboy) Hall of Fame – at the age of 89. Horseback riding and working with cattle was second nature to this family.

Christy’s grandmother threw lovely parties in her Hilo bayfront home. She had a grand piano set on old lauhala mats. Uncle Floyd Ho’opi’i was the usual piano player, although Charles K.L. Davis was a frequent visitor and pianist in their home. The name of Christy’s album, “Le`ale`a” is taken from “The Mane’o Waltz”, a song Davis loved to perform.

It was this influence – these parties thrown by her grandmother – that gave Christy her inspiration to record an album. Her father loved genealogy and encouraged her to research the Hawaiian side of the family. The recording of a CD of Hawaiian songs became a way for Christy to perpetuate the style of music heard in the parties of yesteryear, thereby becoming a legacy to leave for her children and grandchildren.

res_1466845105071While striving to complete her studies at the University of Hawai`i at Hilo, she became Miss Aloha Hawai`i and represented Hawai`i Island in the Miss Hawai`i Scholarship Pageant. From this event, she learned how much fun it was to be on the stage and to perform. As a Beauty Pageant emcee, she hosted more than 50 events.

As a singer and ‘ukulele player, she has been playing Hawaiian music at the Hilo International airport, at several hotels on the Kohala Coast and is a featured entertainer on the cruise ship, “{The Pride of America”. She has worked with a variety of musicians and was able to include some of her favorite musicians in the album project. Under the direction of Producer Jj Ahuna, a bright and charming album was created that showcases Christy’s unique vocal style and brings several hula classics to the forefront. It is a true Hawai`i Island album of beloved Hawaiian classics. Christy Lassiter and Noenoe
